I returned to black-and-white linoleum prints for practical reasons. I needed some illustrations for a black-and-white book. On the surface that sounds pretty simple, but as any artist can tell you, what looks simple can really be quite complex, and engaging.
In order to achieve these print results, I rely heavily on design first and foremost. A great deal of my time is spent on the front end designing a print because the medium is less forgiving when you are designing in one color. For me, that requires quite a bit of study in contrast and how the light lays on the paper to reveal details. Once designed, I transfer the image onto the block where the real joy of carving comes into play. The finished carved block is an art piece and artifact all by itself that few rarely see. Finally comes the wet inky process of printing itself. This too has its own joys, challenges and craft. The effect of seeing multiples spin from your work is a great reward. So what ultimately looks simple on paper is really a three tiered process of design, carving, and printing. Mastering those skills is an ongoing process and pursuit.
Return to this portfolio for new work and editions over time and thank you for arriving today.
